The Weimaraner (/ ˈ w aɪ m ər ɑː n ər / VY-mə-rah-nər) is a large dog that was originally bred for hunting in the early 19th century. Early Weimaraners were used by royalty for hunting large game such as boar , bear and deer .

The Weimaraner is a dog bred in the early 19th century in a place called Weimar which is now called Germany. At the time it was called a Weimar Pointer and was bred to be a hunting dog, first of big game like bear, deer and wolves, then as the forests shrunk from increased industrialization and population, of smaller game like foxes, birds and rabbits.
